Catching up with art stuffs

I have a bit of an art backlog to post, so let’s see what I have sitting in my files.

There’s this artist who paints these gorgeous landscapes based on videogames, so I wanted to give it a shot. Also I followed this tutorial and it was really fun and interesting.

Fanart for the book Starship’s Mage by Glynn Stewart. I had known of this book’s existence for a long time, but didn’t actually pick it up until a friend recommended it. It’s science fiction with space ships and stuff, except the only way to hyperspace jump between stars is to have a Mage use magic to do it. So the ships are all engraved with runes on the inside, and in the ship’s center is a simulacrum of the ship that the Mage interacts with to Jump. Magic and the runes it runs on work like circuits and computer code, so it’s very logical. I’m very pleased with book 1 and will probably have to read the whole series. The heroes are in constant hot water because they are just trying to do the right thing. I LOVE that.

Also, I sent this to the author and made his day. 😀

This is a comic making fun of the Christmas event in Destiny where you make cookies out of bits of monsters. World of Warcraft had this same kind of event, so I think they must just be how videogames do Christmas-themed quests. These are a couple of characters I’ve been working on, and I wanted to draw the girl with the scars to see what she’d look like.

Fangirls and inktober

Hurrah for Inktober, the very best time of the year! Wait, it’s not a real holiday? Who says? 😀

Inktober is just when you draw something in pen and ink every day for all of October. Doesn’t have to be any good. It’s just for fun and practice. There are prompts, if you need ideas. I never use them, though. I find I get more blocked on prompts than I do coming up with my own ideas.

So, here’s my first Inktober pic, which took two days:

This was an experiment to use texture brushes and see if I could get a cloth look going. Clip Studio Paint has all these neat textures that I’ve been trying to figure out how to use. I also got to use my belt brush! I’ve been dying to sneak a belt into a pic somewhere.

And here’s a comic about what happens when you find out that you have a fangirl. Worse, when your friends find this out.

This comic took the better part of a week to do. And it was so fun doing the expressions, trying to convey all the emotions happening in each panel. 😀

Pretty colors with Clip Studio Paint

Over the past few weeks, I’d been searching for an alternative to Adobe Photoshop. I tried out the demo of Clip Studio Paint, liked it, and bought it on sale. Since then, I’ve done tutorials and realized that this program can do everything. I’ll show off some of my experiments.

Stay behind me!
Sonic characters as Destiny classes, just because it was funny.
Shadow is the coolest, naturally.
Rex Magtoris, a character from a story

This was a speedpaint to try out the clothing brushes in Clip Studio Paint. The gold braid and the ruffle brushes have potential, but I need to really experiment with them.

The cat ghost’s cuteness is overwhelming.

This comic was me trying out the comic tools in Clip Studio Paint. It does panels, speech bubbles, and layout tools like you wouldn’t believe. It also has 3D posable models to use as reference, which made me insanely excited. I spend hours searching for just the right pose or angle, and now I can just slap down a model and pose it the way I want.

I’ve had to do hours of tutorials to get this far, and I have hours more ahead of me. And let me tell you, I am SUPER excited. 😀

Sketches and things

Checking my files, I actually do have some artwork to show, even if it’s just sketches. So here we go!

A super ugly dragon

I’m currently in that stage with the baby where he’s allllllllmost crawling. He scoots around on his belly and finds toys on his own, so I have entire minutes to myself again. Our usual routine is that our morning is spent doing school or chores, and the afternoons are nap or screen time. That’s when I get to draw or whatever. But the baby doesn’t have that routine yet, so I feel like I have zero time to do anything extra.

My life is intensely boring. 😀

On the plus side, a boring life means that I want to write and draw adventurous things, so there’s that.

Certain day jobs become useful when monsters attack. Like … fighting monsters for a living.
30-minute speedpaint

So that’s what I’ve been up to. Living in my head a lot, not doing much else except keeping children alive being a mom.

Dawnblade – step by step

Artwork I did this week–some Destiny fanart, which means two people in armor and fiery wings and swords battling it out.

Pretty!
This is my initial sketch, just working out poses and stuff. Erased and redrew a lot at this stage.
Next, more details. The sketch is more refined, and I drew their armor.

Next comes inking. I’m not super good at this stage, and my tablet is uncooperative. The pros do this stage with the pen tool and vector lines, but I’m usually trying to get this done while the baby is asleep and lack time.
Next, I blocked in their colors and added the shading.
Time for background and special effects, my favorite! The inked lines stand out a bit. I color over those last.
The wings needed more contrast, so I added black to really make them pop. The inked lines got some painting treatment, too.
Last of all, a red gradient set to Liner Dodge to give the figures a nice red glow.

I haven’t done a pic like this in a while, and it was nice. Here’s a comic, too, about what happens when our main tank jumps games from Destiny to Fortnite.

Return of the art blog

When I first started this blog a few years ago, it was just a place to post my art and talk about how I made it. I branched out from there, but I still like the idea of just blogging my various sketches and things.

I’ve been trying to post art on Tumblr, but … let’s face it, Tumblr is just about the worst platform I’ve ever used, even worse than Facebook. Facebook will at least put all your pictures into an album. Good luck finding ANYTHING on Tumblr.

I do post to my deviantart and Pinterest, but I’d like to have a central spot of my own to post extra bits. So expect more art from me and less pithy stuff. I don’t have much brainpower for pith, anyway, which is why I haven’t updated.

Art-wise, I’ve been furiously studying and practicing, trying to improve. Mostly I’ve been focused on comics and things centered around Destiny, because it gives me an excuse to draw both humans and armor, two things I’m sadly bad at. So you may have to endure a lot of game-related jokes and fan characters.

So, really, the same stuff I draw for the Sonic fandom. 😀

So here’s a few of the things I’ve done recently, just to kick things off.
